WE WILL HAVE TO CHANGE IT ALL
On Wednesday November 5th, at 3:03.08 pm, there were 7 255 989 791 people on the planet,
so more than 7 billion humans (we were 6 billion in 2000... and 600 million in 1700). The
demographic growth forecast for 2025 is +45% (there are more than 232 000 additional people
every day on the planet).
Since 2007, humanity has become mostly urban (51%) with more than 3 billion people; 70% in
2050 (29% in 1950). 60% of this population is in Asia.
Every day, humans consume and throw away 10 billion kilograms of trash (40% of which are
packaging), a tendency that is worsening: +40% in 2020.
In France only, every year, 8 million cubic meters of water go down the drains of shampoo
vats in hair salons (the equivalent of 6500 municipal swimming pools). Dirty water with toxic
ingredients from synthetic cosmetics (preservatives, cleansing base, synthetic fragrance, silicon,
etc.). These components inevitably end up in waste water. According to an American study,
50% of European rivers are endangered because of chemical pollution. Sewage treatments have
effectively diminished pollution of surface waters, but underground waters are, unwittingly,
more and more polluted and endangered. These underground waters feed with drinkable
water two billion people, of which 2/3 are Europeans and 1/3 Americans. Our underground
water is usually considered to be pure, but a great part of this water is actually deeply polluted
by waste that does not all go through sewers. And this pollution is growing every day as these
waters are renewed very slowly and pollution thus increases every day.
In October 2014, Europe announced it had lost 421 million common birds in only 30 years.


EUROPE HAS THE MOST AMBITIOUS HEALTH
LEGISLATION OF THE WORLD
REACH for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. A European
law to control chemicals (2007), a first stone to protect health and environment (3-year
negotiations). So it is the most ambitious health legislation in the world. A thousand new
chemicals appear every year... On over 100 000 substances commercialized in European Union,
only 3000 have been studied (REACH objective: study 30000)


Communication from the CEE: «Scientific proves are accumulating on links between chemical
substances and (serious) effects on health: allergies, learning difficulties, some cancers, infertility
and reproducing system troubles...».
Synthetic cosmetics cause skin reactions for 15 to 20% of the population.


 


BEAUTY PROFESSIONAL IN DANGER
As the first population concerned by professional asthma, 30% of asthma cases come from
hairdressing (2003, National French Observatory for professional asthma).
As the first population concerned by allergy problems, 78% of professional diseases in hairstyling
have an allergic origin. 34% of professional skin diseases with an allergic origin come from
hairstyling.
23% of professional asthma for women is directly due to persuflite alacalin from bleaching
powder (2nd cause of asthma for this population).
There are 5 times more professional diseases in hairstyling than in the whole French working
mass in all sectors ... And 10 times more concerning all respiratory and skin affections.
73% of hairdressers have stopped working in their profession, not because of economic reasons,
but because of conditions due to their job.
4% of company managers have to stop their activity because of invalidating respiratory allergies
(AVA hairstyling-cosmetic report, 2000).
The regular use of synthetic shampoo is acknowledged to cause skin reactions (destruction
of the lipid film...). Hands (especially apprentices’) are subjected one time out of two to skin
irritations at the beginning of their carrier.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) a classified hair-stylist and barbers in
group 2A (probably carcinogenic for men).
The average exercising period for a hair-stylist lasts 8 years.

CONSCIOUS CLIENTS, CONSUM’ACTORS AND
NOT ONLY CONSUMERS ANYMORE
Ten years ago, in France, 20% of people said to be ready to make efforts for a more responsible
consumption. In 2012, 69% declared they have changed their habits.
More than 80% of consumers think that indicating the good manufacturing process for a
product is a good selling argument. 83% of French people think that with their buying choice,
they behave according to their convictions. They are also 77% to be careful not to buy anything
from a brand they disapprove of.
Their buying choices are more and more relevant with their convictions. The social,
environmental and ethic characteristics become more important to people. What has this
company done for me? How does it participate in harmony for society’s evolution? What are
the conditions in which these shoes were made? Have children worked to make them? Does
this brand contribute to the planet’s saving? Is this product bad for my health?
Daily buying choices influence production modes. Voting, consuming: the difference is not that
big. By voting, citizens give power to people expressing ideas close to theirs. By consuming, it
is all the same: choosing products and services that carry certain values makes it possible to
influence the world in which we live. And when they lack an efficient way to vote, citizens use
their consumption choices as way to act.
